The fifth Forestry Challenge Championship was held on April 23 to 25 at Camp Sylvester in Pinecrest, Tuolumne County. With only the teams that scored over 200 from the fall events earning the invitation, 28 teams from 16 schools participated from as far North as Foresthill and as far south as Oceanside.
The focus topic was What to Do with Everything but the Sawlog. Students evaluated the vegetation in a 44 acre unit scheduled for treatment and determined the best way to dispose of cull logs, limbs and tops of sawlogs, sub-merchantable trees, and brush. There were several options available to dispose of vegetation, either by treating it onsite or moving it offsite to a processing facility. During the Challenge, teams also completed a rigorous field test to assess their technical forestry knowledge and data-collecting skills. Prior to the start of the event, many school groups toured the Heartwood Biomass and Jamestown Energy plants in Jamestown.
