Highest Scoring Team Presentation

The importance of local partnerships was a highlight of the 2017 San Bernardino Forestry Challenge.  First and foremost, our new partnership with SkyPark at Santa’s Village will provide opportunities to conduct fieldwork for years to come, while providing data to owners Bill and Michelle Johnson that will help guide their management activities on the 235-acre property.  The goal of our first visit to SkyPark was to assess the reforestation efforts in the wake of the Old Fire.  The data revealed a seedling count of 200 trees per acre, with many teams concluding that the area was adequately stocked, and just needs maintenance to allow the seedlings to grow and thrive.  A second new partner is Rim of the World High School, whose leadership class sent volunteers to be timekeepers for final presentations.

The results are out of a possible 250 points:

  • First Place:  Oxford High School Team 17, 221 points
  • Second Place:  Charter Oak High School, 216.3 points
  • Third Place:  Oxford High School Team 18, 215 points
  • Fourth Place:  J.W. North Team 10, 208.8 points
  • Fifth Place:  J.W. North Team 11, 193 points

Oxford also won the Pacing Contest, with Vista and Hawthorne High Schools coming in second and third.

Other schools at the Challenge were:  California Academy of Math and Sciences, Citrus Hill, Littlerock, Ridgeview, and Sonora.
