Volunteer with Forestry Challenge
Volunteer job descriptions
Registration – Collect participant paperwork, hand out t-shirts and cruiser vests.
Day 1, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. 4 people, no experience necessary.
Night Hike Leader – Lead a short night hike around the area.
Day 1, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., 1 or 2 people with a background in wildlife biology.
Field Training – Teach students how to use forestry tools, identify basic tree species, and use an identification key.
Day 2, 8:30 a.m. to noon. 16 people, forestry background helpful but not needed.
Field Trip/Data Collection – Help students collect data in field, possibly including tree population, size, species composition, basal area, canopy cover, and fuel loading.
Day 2, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. 16 to 32 people with a forestry background.
Ask a Forester – Meet with student teams to discuss their solutions to the given focus topic.
Day 2, 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. 11 foresters. Must spend about ½ hour reading materials prior to event.
Field Testing – Exam proctors monitor testing stations and keep students on schedule.
Day 3, 8:30 to 12:30 and/or 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., 8 people, no experience necessary.
Presentation Judges – Listen to student presentations, ask questions after each presentation, and fill out score sheet.
Day 4, 8:00 a.m. to noon. 24 people, no experience necessary, but must spend about ½ hour reading materials prior to event.
