Forestry Challenge Championship group photo

The fifth Forestry Challenge Championship was held on April 17 to 19 at Camp Sylvester in Pinecrest, Tuolumne County. With only the top 25% of teams from the fall events earning the invitation, 29 teams from 23 schools participated from as far North as Weed and as far south as Oceanside.

The focus topic is Fuelbreak Maintenance.  Students will identify the various methods used to treat existing fuelbreaks to maintain them and create a “mini-manual” with a flowchart that will help land managers determine which method works best for specific locations and situations. During the Challenge, teams also completed a rigorous field test to assess their technical forestry knowledge and data-collecting skills. Prior to the start of the event, several school groups toured the Sierra Pacific Industries mill in Sonora.

Here are the results out of a possible 250 points:

First Place:  Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center (Tulare County), 213.8 points

Second Place:  Golden Sierra High School (El Dorado County), 211.7 points

Third Place:  Woodside High School (San Mateo County), 207.8 points

Fourth Place:  Mira Loma High School (Sacramento County), 207.3 points

Fifth Place:  Palisades Charter High School ( Los Angeles County), 207.0 points

Other high schools at the Championship were: Adolfo Camarillo (Ventura), Anderson New Tech (Shasta), Benicia (Contra Costa), Charter Oak (Los Angeles), Forest Hill (Placer), Granada Hills (Los Angeles County), John F Kennedy (Los Angeles), Mariposa (Mariposa), Middletown (Lake), Nevada Union (Nevada), Oceanside (San Diego), Pacific Crest (El Dorado), Ross (Marin), Ulysses S. Grant ( Los Angeles), Venture (San Juaquin), Weed (Siskiyou), and West Campus (Sacramento).
