Highest Scoring Team Presentation

Rain, rain, rain!  A significant storm moved through Leoni Meadows from Thursday mid-day to late Friday night, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of participants at the 2016 El Dorado Forestry Challenge.  Students used their compass skills to locate plots on 250 foot centers during Thursday’s fieldtrip, and used Brown’s Transect methodology to collect data that would help them calculate fuel loading and simulate prescribed fire behavior.  Field testing was wet, but the students powered through, and soared on Leoni’s zip line and adventure course in equally wet conditions.  Many of the teams concluded, after running the fire behavior computer models, that the unit will not be ready to burn for a few more years, helping the Leoni forest manager prioritize fuels treatments on their well-managed forest.

The results are out of a possible 250 points:

  • First Place:  Vista Del Lago, 213.0 points
  • Second Place:  Bella Vista, 209.8 points
  • Third Place:  El Dorado, 206.2 points
  • Fourth Place:  Foresthill, 203.3 points
  • Fifth Place:  Vista Del Lago, 202.2 points
